Demeter Orphic Hymn Lyrics
Demeter, mother of all,
goddess with names that call,
sacred Demeter, you feed,
bringing joy and all we need.
You give wealth, and crops rise,
all things you provide, so wise.
Peace and work, you delight,
guarding seeds with all you might.
Wheat in heaps, fields you grace,
green fruits grow in every place.
In Eleusis, sacred ground,
you are loved and honoured round.
Nurturer of mortal life,
first to yoke the oxen’s strife,
bringing humans a blissful way,
happy lives in every day.
Helper of crops, you thrive,
Dionysus’ partner, you drive.
With torch bright, pure you stand,
summer sickles in your hand.
Under earth, yet seen by all,
friendly goddess, heed our call.
Loving children, honoured maid,
feeding young ones, never swayed.
Chariot with dragon reins,
followers shout your name in strains.
Single-born, but many blessed,
goddess revered, by all addressed.
Forms of flowers, sacred blooms,
come, blessed goddess, fill our rooms.
Bring us peace and order, dear,
wealth and health, always near.
